My name is Pete Johnston, and I offer instrumental lessons on guitar and bass, and courses in theory, composition, and improvisation. I have a Ph.D. in music, over fifteen years’ experience teaching students of all ages in private conservatories and at the university level, and extensive experience as a freelance musician and composer in the jazz, folk, and rock music scenes in Toronto. Please see my resume for more details about my teaching experience and qualifications.

Teaching Services

My primary goal is to help students realize their creative potential by providing them with a solid musical foundation and a positive learning experience. Lessons are tailored to suit each student’s particular interests and goals, based on the kind of music they want to make.

Along with beginner and intermediate lessons on the guitar or bass in any style, the particular areas I can help with include:
  • Reading music and understanding musical structures
  • The fundamentals of music theory and harmony
  • Ear training to aid in learning songs from recordings
  • Improvisation
  • Musicianship skills
  • Composition
As an experienced teacher at the post-secondary level, I can also help students prepare for audition and entrance exams for college or university music programs.

I offer private and group lessons in my downtown studio (just north of Christie station, at Dupont Street), in one hour and half hour increments. I can also conduct lessons over Skype, for those who wish for lessons in their own home.

One-hour Lessons: $40
Half-hour Lessons: $25
Group Lessons: to be negotiated depending on number of participants

Payment options include PayPal and email money transfer.
